Niseko Beers Profile 2 - Onuma Alt

December 26, 2018

This brewery was established in 1997, relatively early in the craft beer resurgence in Japan. Onuma literally means large lake and this is what the area is principally known for. The brewery is located a stone's throw from the lake and its taproom Brauhaus Onuma is a popular attraction. Many breweries take their initial inspiration from Germany and this one is no excpetion. We take several beers from this brewery but particulalrly like the Alt and Kolsh beers they make. Onuma has won over 50 prizes for its beer over the years.

Alt literally means "old' in German and according to Michael Jackson it is a 'copper-coloured, clean tasting German ale of the style particularly associated with the city of Dusseldorf. It is a top-fermenting beer in typical German style but is a beer that is closer to a Belgian or British ale in character. Cold conditoning of the beer tends to take away the fuitiness that you would tend to find in a Belgian or British ale though. It has a light to medium body and a fairly hoppy character.
